Every keyword difficulty score is answering one narrow question: how strong are the backlinks of the ten pages currently ranking? That is it. Content quality, intent fit and freshness are mostly outside the number.
Used for what it measures, the score is a great first filter. Trusted for what it does not measure, it hides your best opportunities.
How the number gets made
That third step explains the disagreements. Each tool compresses its own index through its own formula, so scores are only comparable within one tool.
Two free ways to get a score
The Keywords Everywhere Keyword Difficulty Checker scores any keyword free from the authority of the current top 10, with volume and CPC context alongside.
Ahrefs' free checker is the second opinion, one keyword at a time, with its estimate of how many referring domains page 1 demands.
Two tools, two scales. Use either consistently and never average them.
The eyeball test that beats every score
Search the keyword and read page 1 like a bouncer reads a queue. Five signals tell you more than the number:
| You see on page 1 | It means | Your move |
|---|---|---|
| All household-name brands | Link fight you cannot win yet | Go longer-tail |
| A forum thread or Reddit post ranking | Google found nothing better | Write the better page |
| Thin or outdated pages | Weak incumbents | Real opening |
| Results miss the intent | Google is settling | Best opening of all |
| Sites your size ranking | Proof it is winnable | Green light |
Scores cannot see a Reddit thread squatting at position 4. You can, in ten seconds.
When to ignore the score
Ignore high scores when intent shifted. If page 1 answers last year's version of the question, strong links defend the wrong content. Fresh, correct pages break in.
Ignore high scores inflated by domain strength. A big site's weak page ranks on reputation. A dedicated page that actually covers the topic beats a giant's afterthought more often than scores predict.
Never ignore intent. A difficulty of 5 on a keyword whose searchers want something you do not offer is a perfect score on the wrong exam.
Where difficulty fits the workflow
Difficulty is filter three of three: after intent, after volume. Our 7-step process places it, and the long-tail guide explains why most winnable keywords never even need the check.
The one-line takeaway: a difficulty score is the backlink strength of the current top 10, nothing more. Filter with it, then let ten seconds of reading page 1 make the real decision.
